VLC and File Associations

Postby rabc2u » 12 Aug 2004 22:45

Hello
I have associated VLC to be the opening program for my bin, avi, mpg, mpeg, in fact all the movie formats.
Ver 0.7.1, worked a treat, files listed in windows explorer all had the vlc icon, and they opened correctly when dble clicked.
I have uninstalled (add/remove) that and installed ver 0.7.2 and am not having a good time with it. On one computer all the associations seem to be done, and they play, but the icon in win explorer is only correct with the bin files, the other movie files are showing the dos icon.
Another computer I have is not even showing any vlc icons at all in win explorer.
If I uninstall 0.7.2 and install 0.7.1, all is working perfectly
I like the single window of 0.7.2 and would like to use it but it seems to give me far too many problems...
Any suggestions would be welcome

A basic question is -- do the files that just show the DOS icon still launch VLC? Sometimes the program association is OK, but the program icon may be wrong.

Icon

Thanks MarkFM, yes the association to VLC appears to be there even tho the icon is wrong. I have never had this before with any other association. If it was an icon prob, why would it not be consistent with all files associated to VLC, as the bin files are showing correctly but the avi and mpg do not ? hmmm.....
And the final nail in the coffin is that if I put back the earlier version 0.7.1, all works fine, so this has to do with 0.7.2 entirely.

Not sure about the why/how. I've actually had exactly the same thing occur with other programs, mainstream MS things like .xls, where Windows has lost the proper icon but continues to open the app.

Anyhow, Under XP (and Win2K) -- open an Explorer window. Select Tools -- Folder Options. Select the File Types tab. Select the file type (e.g., mpg), then click the Advanced button. This opens a secondary window -- right at the top is a "Change Icon" window where you can pick any icon you want. The VLC icon (.ico) is located in the main VLC directory, the one where you run vlc from.

In an uninstall/reinstall, if the directory changes for some reason, windows no longer could find the opeopwe VLC .ico file. If the designated .ico doesn't exist, Windows defaults to the built-in DOS icon.

Re: setting videolan as my default media player

How do I make videolan my default media player? I have had to remove windows media because of a missing dll problem and now cannot edit videos because there is no default player associated with certain files? They still show to be associated with windows media player though.

Right click on a file of a given type (e.g., .mpg), select Properties. You should see an "Opens with" section on the Properties page, where yuou can select the app you want. Tthere's also an "Always open with this..." kind of checkbox, to make the file association permanent.

BTW. you should reinstall WimP, because other programs cannot use VLC for editing etc.
Don't use PMs for support questions.
