The problem above ("the last letter of every paragraph is displayed at the start of the paragraph") continues
also in VLC 0.8.6c -wxWidgets interface on XP. To explain it, let A,B,C,D,E,... represent hebrew characters.
If the subtitle that should be displayed, from right to left, is
EDCBA
then VLC displays in fact
DCBAE

Hum, that sounds bad. Does a nightly development build work better? ( http://nightlies.videolan.org )

I installed vlc-0.8.6d-win32.exe from branch-20070726-0330/

Unfortunately, the answer is positive: the hebrew subtitle is displayed as described above.

can you try a 0.9.0 version? (0.8.6d is a bugfix release only ... so it's missing a lot of the changes made in the last 6 months)

Thanks. vlc-0.9.0-svn-20070717-0000-win32.exe displays the hebrew subtitles correctly.

CTL codes are shown on screen

Postby jim_hill_au » 20 Feb 2008 02:38

Hi j-b

With 0.8.6 (c and d) i do not have the problems with hebrew subtitles that others reported here.

The subtitles are created by some python code i wrote, in utf-8, with unicode CTL codes added. ( I work with translators, and prepare their texts for use by software that creates subtitle images, usually Belle Nuit, and it needs the CTL codes.)

The CTL codes used are RLE (RtL Embed) at the start of each line,
and PDF (Pop Directional Format) at the end of each line.
Embedded latin text and digits come out the right way round.

But there is one problem:
the CTL codes are shown on screen;
exactly how depends on the font being used,
usually a large empty square.

What chance this will be fixed? It may be easy?
MPC already does it right, but i'd rather use VLC, if possible.

Tried the 2008 Feb 19 nightly build, but don't see any video.
not even a blank screen. tried with an mp4 and an mpg.
can hear the sound OK.

best
jh
