vlc 0.7.2 takes a while to open... 0.7.1 didnt

For questions and discussion that is NOT (I repeat NOT) specific to a certain Operating System.

Than you have a different problem, because VLC on the mac doesn't use upx.

Try deleting your preferences. That usually cures a lot.

I did do that. In fact, I did a complete uninstall then reinstall. Still have the problem. It doesn't exist after the program has been launched and played something. Just that initial startup. Anyone else with a mac have this problem?

the noupx one is much faster than the upx one.
(PIII 500MHZ, 256MB RAM, Windows2000)

but, how to compile noupx one?
I use cygwin to compile without upx tools, but the one I compile is very slow...
(I use the config file from INSTALL.win32 )

the config file is
---------------------------------------------------
./bootstrap &&

CPPFLAGS="-I/usr/win32/include -I/usr/win32/include/ebml" LDFLAGS=-L/usr/win32/lib CC="gcc -mno-cygwin" CXX="g++ -mno-cygwin"
./configure --disable-sdl --disable-gtk --enable-nls --enable-ffmpeg
--with-ffmpeg-mp3lame --with-ffmpeg-faac --enable-faad
--enable-flac --enable-theora --with-wx-config-path=/usr/win32/bin
--with-freetype-config-path=/usr/win32/bin
--with-fribidi-config-path=/usr/win32/bin
--enable-livedotcom --with-livedotcom-tree=/usr/win32/live.com
--enable-caca --with-caca-config-path=/usr/win32/bin
--with-xml2-config-path=/usr/win32/bin
--with-dvdnav-config-path=/usr/win32/bin --disable-cddax
--disable-vcdx --enable-release

The noupx version fixed it for me (Athlon again - a 700 here),

For some reason, when i replace the vlc.exe from noupx.zip to the install of upx1.zip vlc.exe, it loaded up much much faster

Check for virus scanning software

Postby guest » 24 Aug 2004 03:45

Some virus scanning software is extremely intrusive during program startup. It seems that some programs somehow hit several dll's multiple times during startup, and every one of those accesses is intercepted by virus scanner. While each intercept may be a fraction of a second, when you add them all up it creates a very noticeable delay.

I've ran into this on Trillian and WinAmp, as well as others I'm forgetting right now. Try disabling your virus software when launching to see if it makes a difference.
