VLC media player and Windows Vista

Postby Jean-Baptiste Kempf » 18 Jun 2007 00:30

Hello to everyone,

For all the Vista users, if you have some problems to see the Video, please use VLC media player 0.8.6c and newer. Don't use older version.

There are still some High CPU usage specific on Vista, but we are working on it.

Thanks,

First off, can I say thanks to all you guys who work on VLC media player. Your efforts are much appreciated. Seriously they are. I use VLC as my main player and I love it. It plays everything I give it with every codec under the sun. Thanks very much. The latest version works well with Vista. No problems at all. Thank you!!!

Hello,

I downloaded the latest version but it broke the Aero theme will playing a movie. The problem doesn't occur in the previous version (b).

Should I try a nightly build?

Odd, I was having the no picture problem in Vista Ultimate 64 until I installed the 0.8.6c and now it works and does not b0rk the Aero. Interestingly enough I am still running 0.8.6a on Vista Ultimate 32 on a different machine with no problems. That machine has the video card from Hell though, this one is on board video.

Works better for me (GeForce FX 5500 on Windows Vista)!

Now Aero no longer cries in Default output, but I still get a VERY bad pitcure quality (big pixel blocks!)

So I'll remain with OpenGL..

Same results.

With DirectX 3D i get the SAME quality (maybe "default" is using this module?).

With DirectX i get same quality + no Aero.

 Very funny !

I am using since its release vlc-0.8.6c on Linux for nearly everything: streaming, watching videos, audio files, record of dvb-t and rtsp.

Hello !

I installed VLC 0.8.6c on Windows Vista and I have a problem with it.

The First problem is that Vista automatically tells me "vista is now using Windows Vista basic colours because the software is not compatible with Windows Vista Aero". And then, it plays me the videos in white and black, with horizontal yellow features.
Could you please tell me if I have something to change in properties or if it really comes from the software incompatibility with Windows Vista Aero and help me to make it work ?

Elo

Edit : I saw somewhere on the forum that someone had some similar problem, and you told him to put the overlay option down. I did it and now the incompatibility message is gone ^^
And so, for the problem of quality of pixel, which is not resolved, I think it comes from windows vista because under windows millenium, it works very well.

Viewing videos on 8.6 don't work for me at all, all it is, is audio with .avi and .wmv and what not. It shows the preview of the file then it doesn't show any more video after that, don't know what to do looked everywhere! if I missed something sorry my apologies.

for your kind information, that post was made when j-b asked vista users to use the pre-offitial release of vlc 0.8.6c.

@j-b: ok, 0.8.6c was OK, but why 0.8.6d ?

I am growing sick and tiered of waiting for 0.9 :x

My sister has Windows Vista and her VLc media player will only play sound and no picture. She installed the 0.8.6c version and it is still doing the same thing. Any help to fix this would be greatly appreciated. Where did we go wrong? Shouldn't that version have worked with Vista?

Please help!!

Thanks

I noticed VLC often crashes under Vista while playing MP3s from a playlist. I think it has something to do with the name of the directory containing the MP3 file, as renaming the directory to something short like "foo" apparently solved the problem. As far as I can tell there is no relation to any specific kind of file, bitrate, ID3 tag or else, it's just the directory names.

Vanessa and co. I had the same problem and i'm not even using vista; i'm actually using xp with the vista areo theme (so the problem seems to be in there). Whenever I played a video i would only get sound and and grey screen, but i found a solution to that.
Go to prefrences, video, output modules, advanced and select open GL video output, that should work.
However i have a problem with that actually, which i honest to god hope someone can help me with, whenever i select that output form the brightness of the video is raised. It's very annoying but there seems to be no other way. It's kind of like when you open a video when another is already running and the brightness is also raised. (i hope someone understand what i'm talking about).
Does anyone know how i can prevent the brightness from raising in that output module, is it a codec thing? Because playing videos in media player classic in aero don't give me any brightness issues..
Thanks in advance..
milo

Check your video driver preferences, most specifically, overlay settings. It's possible the driver is adjusting the brightness for overlay video.
