Ubuntu Feisty, VLC 0.8.6 and H264

Hello!

Im currently trying to playback a matroska file containing a H264 video, but for some reason VLC only plays back like 1-2 sec of the video and then stops.

I can provide all the info you need, but i don't really know what info is needed to help me

But heres some:

Tried two different mkv files with H264 - both same result.
Xine and MPlayer can't play theese files properly either.
I am using default output module.
Videos play nicely with VLC and windows xp.

you have to start vlc from the cli with the '-vvv' switch so that we can know what the error messages are.

I am playing theese files from a mounted network drive with -ro options.

I have followed the instructions on compiling VLC and ffmpeg, but for some reason i cant compile the player. The only thing i did different from the instructions was to use --disable-jack instead of --enable-jack when configuring VLC (for some reason it gave errors when it was --enable). probably something related to your mozilla libs. try reconfiguring with "--disable-mozilla" and then make.

Thanks for the tip! It compiled now.

And i actually got to play one of the mkv movies - the dvd one.

However! The quality of this video was not impressive compared to the quality i get in windows. The linux picture is somewhat... blocky Not big blocks but you can see the border and edges of stuff on the scene being very blocky. Also it crashed once when i searched fast through the movie, havent played much with it yet so dont know if its a persistent error.

And i still got the problem with the CPU usage going up to 100% whenever i play an mkv file in VLC.

Which leads me to the next problem: the other movie plays now, but it doesnt seem like the codec stand a chance to decode all the data. I get very low frame rate when i play the movie (like 1 frame every 4-5 seconds in VERY bad quality). I suspect this problem might have something to do with the 100% CPU usage. Something we forgot to optimize? Some setting that needs to be changed?

I know i dont have a super super strong CPU but a barton 2500 should still be able to run a HD movie. At least i think so

And the last thing. I don't have the original look and feel of the VLC player. Do i simply just install the vxwidget skin and all is back to normal?

Actually come to think of it, the quality is the same as the MPlayer is able to produce (except MPlayer also makes some green 'smudge' at the left area of the screen). The quality might be a problem FFMpeg produces?

Ok, i tried running the x264 movies on my Athlon X2 4200 cpu with windows. They actually use quite alot of cpu-power to decode. So that solves the mystery with high cpu-usage under linux (thought it might be a bug). Just out of curiosity - why does it use so much?

I am still concerned about the quality of the movies tho. I have taken screenshots of the same scene on both win and linux, and they both show the same high quality. But the quality of the picture i get from screenshots is not the same as the quality i get on the picture on my screen (very blocky edges).

So i decode one quality, but before the picture reaches output as a screen image it is degraded in quality. Very annoying. Any help?
