Just one question: even though I don't have Vista, are there still some other improvements/bugfixes that were made that might make it worth getting for XP, or is it strictly Vista?

Vista 32bit home premium on AMD Ducal Core with Nvidia 7300 LE and very latest Nvidia Drivers (158.24 June 1st)

Direct 3D rendering now works, aero stays on and video moves with window when moved on desktop. Basicallg gives about same performance as OpenGL (CPU usage around 20 - 30%) playing 480p Quicktime trailer.

DirectX still knocks out aero and video stays locked to desktop regardless of where window is moved.

Found a problem outputting 2+ channel AC3 audio to stereo setup in Vista x64, WMP does fine and the problem doesn't present itself on XP. I'm going to do some further testing and will try to get as much useful data as possible. I'll post back as soon as I can.

At last! This latest version of VLC is fantastic. I run Vista Home Premium on Intel 2 core duo (T7200) with 2 GB Ram and Nvidia 9700 GS on my Dell laptop. I'm using 158.45 drivers. I can confirm that this works without any problems whatsoever. No need for the VLC tweaks with Vista in order to get it to work. Fantastic stuff. I hope this helps. For the moment being the latest official release is 0.8.6b, especially when you are looking for the sources (I mean the "official and latestet source-release").

The version 0.8.6c is obtainable in the branch-svn ou nightly-build version for Windows, for example here:
http://nightlies.videolan.org/build/win ... 0617-0330/

Maybe 0.8.6c will soon replace 0.8.6b as latestet and stable official release. In any case for Linux and Mac-Users I believe there is no difference (between 0.8.6c and 0.8.6b) and the Windows-Users can get the branch-nightly-build.

I've just discovered my problems were not caused by speaker-setup, but by the Volume Normalisation filter (either active by default from preferences, of enabled via the Extended GUI). Pretty annoying actually because I use it pretty much all the time :/.
On 0.8.6b and 0.8.6c dated 13/07, voices and such were nonexistant, on 0.8.6c (dated 16/07) that I've just installed, they were strongly suppressed but still just audible, which is how I discovered it.
2-channel AC3 does work normally with volume normalisation, it get's messy with 3 or more.

The point is that the official download links at
http://www.videolon.org/vlc
are still pointing at vlc-0.8.6b !!
Furthermore there is not yet a release announcement (I mean from the videolan team). The simple fact of putting some files in a folder on the "official" server does not imply the final and official release, especially if the person being officially responsable for building the binaries is telling you that this is not yet official. Probably this is to allow to some people to test, verify that everything works before the release and apparantly this is not the yet the case.

No, it is official when there is an announcement done and when it is written on the main page.

Those are test binaries that are not good yet. (there has been already two modifications on it).

If you don't believe me, use them. But don't come back to say that they don't work.

There was a problem copying the win32 binaries onto the main download location. This has been corrected before any announcements.

The wrong files were there for a short while but not all download mirrors synced yet with the new files. The win32 files which are now on the main download with the following MD5 checks are the proper ones:

As I said in a previous post, unoffical or not this does appear to work well with Vista. Having said that, I'll check the main page here in a few days or so and download the offical release.

Sites that announce downloads like that usually have a habit of just linking to the main download location and don't host themselves, but to be on the safe side always use the download link from the main page: http://www.videolan.org/mirror.php?file ... -win32.exe

As for Vista and in particular Aero and Direct3D compatibility. 0.8.6a had some code for that which worked better for NVidia. Things were improved in 0.8.6b but it seemed to behave better for ATI cards and not so much NVidia. 0.8.6c should make it work for both (always make sure you use the latest official drivers).

Thanks! I got that version from free-codecs a few days ago so I'll download the offical one now. May I also say to all the people who work on VLC that your efforts are much appreciated. VLC plays absolutely everything I have thrown at it and the good news is that the codecs are contained within the programme and not scattered all over your hard drive which can be bad news. Keep up the good work!!!
