How to stream audio?

I am new to all of this so as simple as possible would be appreciated. What I would like to do is recieve an audio stream on the VLC player and then then stream it out from my computer.

It should work! Just don't try it on an ADSL (phone) service. But a DSL (cable) should work.

But how do I make it work. Is everything I need on the VLC player? Or are there other things that need to be downloaded. I am trying to restream something I am playing from a URL. Why do you recommend on cable but not on phone?

I was looking at all the tabs and I will try the wizard to see if it works for me.

You don't need any extras software. VLC does it.

ADSL is not a synced service and you can only do up or down but not both at the same time. Whereas DSL you can, because it is 2 separate channels.

BTW some DSL providers do not offer a synced service but it is always 2 channels.

How can I tell if my service is synched or not? I am connected through a phone line but am told I have DSL.
I did go through the VLC streaming wizard and in the status box I show data being recieved and sent but if I go to another computer I cannot access the page.
What web address do I put in on another computer to access my stream, http://yourip:8080 does not work.

Here's a good one. I suddenly realized that http://yourip:8080 is "your ip" and not "you rip". Duh.

I'm not aware of any phone company that provides High Speed Internet service that will tell you they offer a DSL service. If you ask them about getting a DSL service they will tell you they offer a ADSL service. There is a difference and I described the difference.

If you happen to find a phone company that tells you they are providing a DSL service, you should find another provider because it will NEVER WORK.

I see there have been no posts in this thread for a while, but This seems to be the most accurate topic for my problem.

I tried using the streaming wizard in VLC to set up an audio only HTTP stream on port 1234. I simply deleted the name of the video device out of the field in the wizard. I then chose an audio codec, chose the WAV encapsulation, and clicked ok. VLC did not give any errors, but just appeared to be streaming.

On the listening computer, I opened VLC. Under the file menu, I opened a network stream. Entered the IP:port of the broadcasting computer. Then I clicked the settings button, and chose WAV, and the same audio codec. Then clicked ok. VLC gives no errors. It just goes back to its initial player window but does not play anything. Thus I have no idea where I have gone wrong or why it is not opening the audio stream from the first computer.

Any ideas?

On the listening computer, I opened VLC. Under the file menu, I opened a network stream. Entered the IP:port of the broadcasting computer. Then I clicked the settings button, and chose WAV, and the same audio codec. Then clicked ok. VLC gives no errors.

The "Settings..." button (enabled by ticking "Steam output") is for setting up a stream. For receiving just enter in the IP address/port and press OK.

To view the messages output go to "View >> Messages...". Then when opening the steam etc. the messages will be logged to that window.
