Grmbl

I closed VLC and now it doesn't work properly anymore whatever frequency I use.
Devil inside I tell you!

Get devcon.exe (device reseter)
devcon *devicename*

You have too look through the registry for the appropriate string too use too reset it, here is mine as a sample.
devcon restart *STREAM\THBDATUNE.VEN*

That may help you with problematic dvb device issues, many times you can reset the card and you get a picture & sound back after a an application using the card has crashed, sometimes not.

It works fine with other apps so I believe it's not a device issue.

I'm going to download the nightly to test it over the weekend but I've never tried the command line approach before. I gather from all of the above that an appropriate command line looks something like:

vlc dvb-t:// :dvb-frequency=219500 :dvb-bandwidth=7 sout=#duplicate{dst=display} :sout-display-delay=1024 --verbose=2 --deinterlace-mode=bob --vout-filter deinterlace

where I choose the particular frequency and bandwidth for my DVB-T channel, and then use Nevigate to find the program within the stream.

Some confirmation (or correction) from wiser minds would be appreciated lest I've lost the plot!

Some confirmation (or correction) from wiser minds would be appreciated lest I've lost the plot!

This syntax is correct, the verbose command is not required though and may slow down the menus.

Hm, it may sound stupid but it works fine every time if I have another DirectX app running at the same time (e.g. a windowed game).

OK, not every time but 95% of the time. But, if I close this game then I always got corrupted image and sound.

Here's my results so far:
- Audio is my biggest issue but that may be because it finds a number of audio devices including my bluetooth device and (I'm guessing here) trying to output to too many devices? Can I stipulate one with an "aout" switch?
- Video gets lots of "PTS out of range (xxxxx) dropping buffer" messahes as well as quite a few "Late picture skipped (xxxxx)" messages, and a few "Computed PTS out of range(xxxxxx), clearing out"
- To change channels, I have to hit the "Stop" button before closing VLC otherwise I get the same channel again even when I re-run VLC with a different frequency.
- In Brisbane (Australia), Channels 7 and 9 are OK, Channel 2 is a bit stuttery, and channel 10 almost unwatchable with very little smooth action. I don't know if this is a product of the audio/video combos that the stations are screening at present or smething else. Using/playing another DirectX program at the same time didn't change things for me.

I been using the command line:
vlc dvb-t:// :dvb-frequency=219500 :dvb-bandwidth=7 sout=#duplicate{dst=display} :sout-display-delay=1024 --verbose=2 --deinterlace-mode=bob --vout-filter deinterlace
as suggested (using verbose=2 for better messages).

I'll keep playing.

Any suggestions to improve viewing are welcome.

I've found on my computer that it works slightly better on my PC with no delay

but the audio is still crappy. How can I designate that it's AC3 audio or MP2 audio or to use a filter that will process one or both of those.

btw: my PC - 3.2Ghz Pentium4, FX5750 PCIe graphics, DVICO Fusion DVB-T card

Oh when it works it's working pretty fine

Codec information is empty, blank window.
For messages, check previous posts, I've posted some logs and other people did the same.

I can confirm this strange behaviour I've reported earlier. If someone could explain me why it happens...

I also confirm a LOT of 'invalid header' messages when it's apparently working fine. I mean image and sound and synchro are perfect, but these messages are still there.

Aspect ratio is correctly working with MPEG2 channels though.

Audio menu -> Audio track

There you can choose the one you want to use.

Sorry for going quiet for a while. I've been working through the VLC code to see what is going on here.
So far all I can say is that there is some kind of synch problem between the TS demux, the mpeg_audio decoder and the aout module. The primary problem seems to be the one of audio buffers being dropped because the PTS is behind where it should be (varies over a wide range but averages around 500ms). The comment in the aout module says when this happens it is because the decoder is messing up the PTS but that is just a comment. Setting sout-display-delay seems to fix this but I have no clue why - nor why running another directx session fixes it. Interestingly, I dumped the stream to file then immediately started another vlc instance to read the dump file and this too worked ok. However, I can't get timeshifting to work to see if this also solves the problem.
I also experimented with the bda module itself to make sure it was not queuing up too many samples before the demux and decoder were ready. This had no effect. The only other thing I can think of in the bda module that may be a problem is the sample size of about 40k (210 ts packets)

I am betting that the solution turns out to be absurdly simple.

isn't it always the way?, weird errors - code is syntax right - oh no logical/implementation bugs .. deep breath, here we go (bang head against wall/monitor multiple times - and repeat) .. take a break, come back too it and the answer stares at your face, kick yourself for not seeing it before and have a little chuckle, ah programming, its a relationship of love'n'hate.

Sorry to be horribly inept but I'm new to the command line stuff. What does the command line look like to re-direct to file?

Like Lotesdelere, the video looks OK (on a couple of channels) but there's still lots of errors in the messages. I seem to get less audio breakup with AC3 sub-streams but even that you still can't listen to. Don't know if this helps.

Thanks Ken. I had tried reading the help info and tried copying the stream command from the GUI version (which had "sout" to a "url" which was a file destination) but that didn't work so I was stuck.

I'll be intrigued if, as I think has been said before, that the file plays OK. My aim is to stream it to my media player (DSM-320) - so while I'm at it, what's the command line to stream via http or whatever else works.

I think this is where the program=program-id option comes in - but you'' need to know the program-id. Check the "messages" in display mode. I think the program-id's are listed when the ts stream is initially identified.

I've only tried this with a couple of channels (the one that gave the fewest and the one that gave the most problems). I'll try it with the others - but it seems strange that VLC dumps to file OK but not display OK.

Again, what's the command line to stream it? I'd love to be able to stream it to my media player!

This is what is so hard to track down. Clearly the bda module is capturing the stream with no major problems which is why it can dump it to file or stream it successfully. Its only live viewing where the audio stream seems to be falling behind causing large chunks to be dropped.
To stream (to http) use:
:sout=#duplicate{dst=std{access=http,mux=ts,dst=<your host ip>:<your port>}}

This mightn't be much help but I found some VLC help (looks Linux based) at http://www.videolan.org/doc/streaming-h ... /ch09.html. It's got some command line options that might help (but when I tried one or two, I was unsuccessful).

I'll see how the streaming goes. In the meantime, I hope the answer springs into your head! Thanks once more Ken S.

Thought I had enabled caching but it turns out the vital one line of code was missing.

Just did a quick test and it appears to fix the problem. I am now doing a more thorough test plus putting a few other vital fixes like avoiding an endless loop if there is no signal received. If all goes well I should be able to submit the patch tomorrow.

On the plus side I learnt an awful lot about how VLC works in the process of tracking it down

I was about to post about that.
I forgot to plug in the antenna wire (yes, I know, if I had a brain etc...) so there was no signal, of course, and VLC just hangs.
You can close the interface but the process is still running and can't be killed. And after few minutes Windows crashes (BSOD).
Just to let you know

BTW any fix on the way for the H264 channels issue ?

And thanks for the streaming command line. In streaming to my media player (DLink DSM-320), I need to filter the ts stream for an individual program id as the DSM doesn't do 1080i high-definition, only 720p, and the media server software will only handle a feed with a single video stream. I tried the program=program-id option (in various places in the command line, including before and after "dvb-t://") but still seemed to get the full transport stream in the "Program" menu of VLC. Any ideas?
