Rejected.
This is not VLC's role to do that but your OS.
Except the last part "automatically hide interface in system tray"
OK. Well then, something simple: since left-click will reveal the interface when hidden, is it possible hide the interface as well, left-click on the system tray icon to hide/reveal interface?

It's just simpler to do then having to right-click on the icon to hide it.
I don't think it is a good idea, since a lot of people will click on it by mistake and loose their video...

Automatically load VLC on OS startup.
I really hate software that auto starts with windows without asking me.

That's why I would suggest making it into a option in the preferences menu. I've seen so many other programs that have an option to make it auto-start upon Windows startup, I was hoping VLC could also do this with a couple more options, but it appears that's not going to happen.

No. You have to do it yourself. Come on...

making a software start up by itself is intruding in the OS. If you want, just put a link to VLC in your Start folder, or in msconfig. That is NOT VLC job.

However, we can add an option to make it start minimized.

OK then, that would be nice. :)

I have some more requests, with screenshots, and I'll post this in a little while. :)

Thanks for adding this, it works really well. What changed your mind, is it something the CloudStalker said? :P

I think I've asked this before but this time it's different (not really :P).

[#16] Auto-scroll Playlist

When the QT4 interface is in its default size (with playlist embedded) there are 15 items that are displayed. When the 15th item is finished playing it will of course play the 16th item.

Problem: the 16th item is no longer displayed within the viewable window. So is there a way to make it auto-scroll to the next item in the playlist showing it as the first item within the viewable window? It would look something like this:

15th item - Bottom of playlist
Image

16th Item - Top of playlist
Image

Maybe it could be made to do the opposite when going from the 16th item back to the 15th item; it will show it exactly as it was before it scrolled to the 16th item. And when the playlist is in fullscreen it will take the same action of auto-scrolling to the next set of items when the current playing item reachs the bottom of the playlist.

So would this be possible? :)

[#16] Auto-scroll Playlist
Yes, partly. But not only.

Anyway, is that still happening with latest NB ? I thought I fixed it..

I know, I checked the timeline/changelog and I remember seeing that added, I then tested it in the nightly builds and nothing was happening. I just now tested it again in the May 7th nightly build and it still doesn't auto-scroll. When (if) you add auto-scroll function could you possibly consider adding this to the playlist menu:

Find currently playing:
Image

This would be useful when searching for other items in a playlist while an item is currently playing, in other words, when you manually scroll it will then break free from the auto-scroll function so as not to interrupt what you are currently searching for, so when one item is finished playing and it goes on to the next it will not auto-scroll; leaving you exactly where you scrolled to.

When you click on, or press the hotkey (Ctrl+P) then it will find the item that is currently playing and display it at the top of the playlist.

Currently playing item:

Does this make any sense? 8)

Hey j-b. Since I've been making all of these crazy requests I thought it might be a good idea if I could actually help out. Any open-source programs you can link me to as well as some information on how to create for an interface? Come on, I'm willing to learn more about this kind of stuff since it interests me, so could you help out?

I know it might be tough but I'm currently interested in helping to finish building the Media Library and start work on my Interface Houdini idea. Soooo... where would I start?

If you want you can post the information here so that maybe others will also be interested in developing for the QT4 interface, or VLC in general. thanks. :)

doc.trolltech.com to learn Qt.
qtcentre.org to help you more.

any good book of C++ will help you.

trac.videolan.org/vlc/browser/trunk/browser/modules/gui/qt4 will give you the actual source code of VLC/qt4.

What would help me is a post with the list of all the requests. So I will be able to answer: Yes/No/Done/Uncertain/Later... :D

how about haveing butons on the three edges of vlc(left, right, down), so that clicking them will slide open the following:

1. Left - visualiser(goom=default)(for audio, main window can have album art)
2. Right - extended gui(equiliser, effects, etc)
3. bottom - playlist, library

al these must be attached to the player and must have a single window.

Hmm, the first two are good but isn't there already a button for Playlist / Library?

  • [#1]Thumbnail Preview From Seek Bar
Very difficult to do now. Very unlikely.
  • [#2] Display Time in Seek Bar When Mouse-over
Doable in Qt, but difficult. If I got time in 0.9.0, if not in 0.9.1.
  • [#3] Preview Items in a Playlist
    Same as #1
  • [#4] Auto Center Interface Based on Desktop Resolution/Interface Resolution
Doable in Qt, but not prioritary. If I got time in 0.9.0, if not in 0.9.1. I would like to have it in 0.9.0
  • [#5] Queue Up Items To Be Saved To a Playlist
Doable. I'll see it for 0.9.0.
  • [#6] Basic Controls / Mini Interface [Task Bar]
Will never be done because too tide with Windows Versions. But the taskbar icon can be improved for 0.9.0.
  • [#7] VLC Starts With Playlist Button Automatically in Embedded mode
    Is a must for 0.9.0
  • [#8] A More Advanced Media Library
Is a must for 0.9.0, but might be difficult to save ratings. I'll see what I can do.
  • [#9] Preview Window / Video Window [Bug?]I still don't understand it, but I think that the idea of having a playlist that takes the video's place (as actually) is a BAAAD idea. A must change for 0.9.0.
  • [#10] Interface Houdini [Disappear Until Mouse-Over]
Will be difficult to make correctly under Qt4. However, i'll see what I can do for 0.9.0 or 0.9.1. I would like to have an option to hide all the toolbar and menus and to keep the video, even If I must keep the decorations.
  • [#11] Fullscreen Controllers
Will be done in SUmmer of Code this summer.
  • [#12] Number Multiple Instances (#)Already done in a better way.
  • [#13] QT4 Super Stretched to Extended Desktop [Bug]
Don't know how to fix it...
  • [#14] Rewind and Fast Forward buttons?
In advance, may change for 0.9.0.
  • [#15] Auto-load VLC On System Startup
NO, NO, and NO. Use Windows NT service or Cron to do the job.
  • [#16] Auto-scroll PlaylistMust be fixed for 0.9.0.
If you have new ideas, add them to THIS list.

Sure, in fact I'll do you one better. I'll put my previous post on page 1 of this topic for easy access, so every time someone makes a new request it can be accessed there. Good? :)

Here it is:

  • [#4] CloudStalker's going to slightly alter that idea from "Auto-Center" to "Position/Auto-Center" as this might make more sense.

[#5] Very much related to #8.

[#8] CloudStalker has more ideas for "Queues" and "A More Advanced Media Library", so before you get started CloudStalker will try to post these soon.

[#9] Cloudstalker will try to explain that one with screenshots when CloudStalker gets the time.

[#10] This is also going to be altered slightly.

[#14] CloudStalker doesn't understand, do you mean there might be an actual "Rewind" funtion?

[#15] Didn't you not see the rolly eyes? :P CloudStalker got it the first time, CloudStalker was just posting all of the requests as you asked CloudStalker to. 8)
And some new ideas will be posted soon. :D

#16 Another icon to be displayed instead of the cone with the ugly "No Album Art Found"-Text in Comic Sans (I could do the icon if you want)
#17 Reduce the size of the extended settings dialog, maybe by dividing the video effects into several sub tabs, atm it looks very overloaded imho.
