questions about bitrate

Postby mycroftx » 17 Apr 2007 01:44

Im streaming with MMSH over the internet and im wondering how many users that can connect to me. Is there a way to check how many connections are streaming from me at a given time?

Right now im streaming with a bitrate of 384kbit/s and im on a 100mbit internet connection that normally give me a max download/upload speed of 8-10 Mb(Megabytes)/sec.

How dows the bandwith work? Will my users each get up to 384kb/s until my 100mbit line is full or?

Best regards
Johan

Peace upon you

if you are using MMS , i suggest for you to use Microsoft Encoder and Windows media server instead of Video Lan , cause MS Encoder support many bitrates ans supports 2 ways of streaming , push and poll

from windows media server you can see the sources of streams ( Publishing points) and users are connected to this source

if you need to stream using MS encoder without MS server you can find in Encoder how many users are connected to your stream ( i recommend use pull in streaming)

to Monitor your bandwidth there exist many tools like "Bandwidth monitor" and "Net Meter" that gives you actudal Upload and download bits or bytes

but actualy if you want to calculate how many accepted concurrent users that you can support you can do simple equation
available concurrent users = My available bandwidth at a time/ streaming bit rate
for example if your max upload speed is 8 MBps and your streaming bitrate = 384 Kbps then max available concurrent users = 8*k*k*8/384*k = 170 concurrent user
given (Byte=8 bit)

B=byte
b=bit

i hope it worth

Thank you very much Hammadkom! peace up on you too! Mediaencoder 9 works very good for streaming mms://. It shows exactly what i need, like how many ppl are connected to me, their ip´s and lot of other realtime statistics about the stream etc. And you can encode mutliple bitrates too at the same time. Really nice!

Im still using VLC for my everyday needs, but when i have to stream to a lot of ppl in mms, MS encoder cant beat the feeling atm :) It also got a very nice interface and wizards.

Thanks!
