ac3 sound very low

Postby stoppage » 28 Mar 2007 02:45

Hi, Ive just installed latest version VCL and when playing AVI files with AC3 sound I must turn the audio WAY up. MPC plays thes files as normal and problem is only with AC3, MP3 is fine. Im new to this player, can anybody help me out please?

AC3 in any player is 8 dB lower in level than DTS or MP3. Unlike most players VLC offers 6 dB of gain rather than 0 dB or unity gain at the top of the slider. The gain is consistent with the Dolby specification for ac3.

So is there a hidden "boost" facility somewhere that I've missed or do I import something to offer the same volume level that MPC plays as standard for these files?

Depending on the codec installed for WMP or MPC there is no difference in levels using ac3. Try shutting down the DRC in all players as the implementation in these do vary and most often DRC adds color and changes perceived level.

VLC does not use Windows codecs! The DRC in VLC is ON by default.

The DRC in AC3 Filter is also ON by default.

Hi, DJ!
So, can VLC users change the value of Gain in VLC?
I have been searching for this setting in VLC since I have upgraded my VLC to 0.86a version, but have no luck finding it!

Hi, DJ!
What should I do then?
I couldn't find any setting for adjusting Gain of DB for AC3 there.

NOT ac3 specifically, it is over all gain that is adjusted here.
