WinTV-HVR-1600 - HW MPEG2 /DirectShow keep it from working?

Postby HokieTT » 13 Mar 2007 19:33

I bought a WinTV-HVR-1600 card. I actually ordered a WinTV-PVR-150, but they sent me the 1600, which adds OTA HD. Anyway, I can't get any of the non-HD video capture to work with VideoLAN (or Windows Media Encoder, or anything other than Hauppauge's own sorry software).

My many hours of reasearch have told me this is because my card does hardware MPEG2 encoding and I need a DirectShow filter that can decode it. However, I have installed a couple (GPL MPEG-1/2 DirectShow Decoder Filter and eleCard's...all I did is follow install instructions), and I'm not sure what to do now to get this thing working. They seem to only be for playing streams and files; I need something that allows DirectShow to access the MPEG2 coming from my capture card.

Please tell me I am not stuck with WinTV and the other non-streaming apps that might work with this just because my card only appears to be able to give me an MPEG2 feed. I only got the card so I could stream TV from home to work (and change channels; it has an IR blaster).

I doubt that the IR Blaster will ever function at work while the card streams content from home. :P This is only one of a myriad of issues.

I would suggest concentrating getting the card to function first. Then learn to transcode, then learn to stream and then talk to your administrator at work as to how to get the stream through their network. This is the short story! :P

While I certainly appreciate your attempt to help, that does not really address my problem at all. I was not asking about help with the IR blaster, and I do not need help with transcoding. I need help getting VLC to recognize the MPEG-2 encoded video stream that the card is outputting. No matter what settings I use, I get absolutely no video.

I hope that doesn't seem too mean; I was all excited to see a reply, but it doesn't help my problem.
