Auto load subtitle

Hi,

on my desktop computer VLC 0.8.6a for Win32 with the default install settings automaticly displays the subtitle for the avi file in the same directory with the same name but srt extension.

But on my notebook computer it doesn't work. I copied the same files to the path as on my desktop but it can not find the subtitle file only if I open it manually.

What can be the problem? I tried to uninstall VLC from my notebook, delete the saved preferences and reinstall it but after reinstalling it still doesn't open the subtitle file automaticly.

Are the version on the desktop and laptop the same ? I had a similar problem where the SRT file would not automatically open but after upgrading to a newer version it defaults to on if the file is there.

This is my experience between 0.8.5 and 0.8.6a too.

But I have version 0.8.6a on my notebook too. So what should I do? Are there any preferences I can delet manually after removing VLC with the delete settings options? If yes, where are these preferences stored?

Try erasing the preferences directory. C:\Documents and Settings\Owner (this is you)\Application Data\VLC Erase VLC, Application Data is a hidden directory so you will need to make it visible.

If I uninstall it with delete saved preferences the VLC directory in Application Data is also deleted. Reinstalled but still no automatic subtitles.

yea i have the same problem using 8.6a

OK! Lets go down the check list:

1. The versions of VLC are the same.

2. The media files are the same as well as the subtitles and carry the same name and exist in the same folder.

3. The preferences files have been deleted.

4. The installed Windows version is the same and in the same language.

Have you tried loading the external sub manually? Ah! Yes it works.

If you have done all of the above there is nothing left I can think of and your machine is unique.
