I can not see the connection between a media player and a cone, how are they related?

No, they are not.
Just because the students from the networking association of the Ecole Centrale Paris that had fun with those cones in the campus. They thought it could be a good emblem for them

Always easy to find an explanation afterwards...Excuse me but I believe they are related. Cone = caution and or under construction. To me this is a perfect description of VLC.

If memory serves me well, the Original Cone, back in 97 or 98, was RV's (RV is a person, not a car ...) one, usually sitting in the NX room (the school TV channel). I've been shouting quite a lot through this one.
That very cone was abusively featured in the various NX programs around that time. Later on, it spawned a few little brothers around the campus, but I believe that the logo actually came from the popularity of this one.
