Play widescreen movie at bottom of screen

Hi,
I have a ceiling-mounted Projector that I watch all my movies on.
My apartment has very high ceilings, and we did want to place some furniture under the viewing area, so I was limited in how low I could place the projection. (I want it as low as possible, so as not to have to look up too high, especially when watching a movie with so many friends that some have to sit in the front row of two rows)

A really simple solution would be to be able to shift the entire (widescreen) movie to the bottom of the screen, which is usually just wasted black space.
The few options I could find, which looked like they might do the trick did not work (Video Alignment: Bottom), and I could find no filters for this either.

I'm using a MacBook, with Mac OS X 10.6.8

I would love to see this feature added (or if it's there already and I couldn't find it - I'd love any hints where I could look).

Thanks

thefool

The feature (Video alignment [Bottom]) works in OS Windows. Did you save settings and restart VLC for changes to take effect?

yes, I tried that, and it has no effect.
neither does bottom left or bottom right, or typing in the number "8" (which is suggested when you hover over the label "Video alignment")
