Hi-

I am using VLC 1.1.11 in Windows XP SP3. This is a great player, and I would like to use it for my very large (1,000 CDs) classical music collection. Nice job on the buffering; no skips at the beginning of the pieces makes this player a winner.

As it stands, I need one of two things to be able to use this software, and I'm willing to donate for one of them (preferably the first one):

Choice 1: Let me have the filename as one of the columns in the Media Library. If I can sort by filename, I can get multiple-CD operas (like Madame Butterfly) to play in order. Right now, VLC very cleverly identifies the album, but I don't see a way to make it differentiate between which album of the two should be first. If I sort by track, I get track 1 from the first CD, then track 1 from the second CD, and so on. If I sort by title, I get the pieces of the opera in alphabetical order. So it seems I can't win. (The real problem is that whatever database you are getting the titles from has all kinds of different standards for titling, so some people have titled the pieces of the first album one way, and the other album another way - so what I will say is that if i can use *my* titles (the filenames) it can work for me.)

Choice 2: Keep the order of the files intact when I drag and drop them into the playlist. Right now, VLC reorders them for me in some strange way that I can't control. If I could use Windows Explorer to find the pieces I want and drag-and-drop the set into VLC whilst retaining the order, I could make VLC work.

So I can't win unless I make a playlist (no, thanks) or I manually reorder the playlist by dragging and dropping (no, thanks).

Please let me know how much you want me to donate for one of these two features (preferably the first one).

I'm not sure I completely understood your problem. Do you have your whole collection in the VLC media library or do you drag n' drop the CDs/files you wanna listen to into VLC's playlist ?

And I guess the URI column is not helping you either - right ?

If you use the playlist (also works for media libr.) you could try the following:

start up vlc with the parameter --no-auto-preparse

Code: Select all

vlc.exe --no-auto-preparse

Now the media browser will show the filenames until the song is played, then the meta-data is parsed and shown.

For drag n' drop even the sorting of your file-manager is maintained (i.e. by filename a-z, z-a; by date or whatever...)

So maybe this solves both your choices.

I'm just a regular user, but I would say it's a very good idea to donate to an open source project.
