Stream to Webcam and Mic Output

Postby Kavukamari » 22 Mar 2011 06:25

I brought this idea up a while ago but it never seemed to go anywhere, which is why I'm suggesting it again.

I really hope VLC can get an option in Streaming to stream Audio to the Mic output and Video to the Webcam output so that it can stream to sites that take that input, it would make things easier if one wants to quickly stream a video on a site that allows such a thing.

It would also be helpful if one wanted to stream to a group of people over skype or another chatting program.

Hopefully it would also support having it so that your voice can still get through somehow... I'm not sure how or if that would work though.

I don't particularly like bumping my own thread, but this is an important issue for me.. Sorry in advance

For Windows this is a little bit hard thing to do, since it would require virtual device driver AFAIK. And buggy implementation could easily cause crashes in other tools, so it could cause major headache to many users.

Is there a way to have it as an addition or plugin or optional install? If there is any way at all that this could be possible I would love it.

Yes as optional install (as it would require registry entries).

But I doubt that anyone wants to do this. (one can always hire someone to do this)

VLC is freeware though, I'd rather not pay anyone anything unless I'm donating to the project itself.

There must be someone who will code it for free...

No. VLC is a GPL program, and freeware ain't same as open source.

See now I just look stupid.

Either way I hope this can be added at least EVENTUALLY. It would be a very useful feature for me and would save me the trouble of getting a dedicated program for that function.

Streaming to an input device is physically impossible. I suppose you mean to convert the VLC output into a pair of virtual audio and video input devices, such that another application can record the VLC stream.

In my understanding, any application capable of recording sound through WASAPI on Windows (Vista or later) or through PulseAudio on Linux can loopback (non-DRM) content. Loopback is a built-in feature then. So there should no need for further VLC development.

Video is more tricky. A dedicated VLC video output (or video filter) plugin is probably unavoidable. Unfortunately, it would be a little bit intricate to configure, so it would be a vast effort for a very limited user base :(

I want to echo this solution. We broadcast live performances through a IPTV Video Encoder to stream through our property for the STBs. VLC catches this stream better than other programs we have tried in the past. VCam catches what VLC is playing and sends it to it's emulated webcam. Flash Media Live Encoder (FMLE) can then stream this "webcam" to the internet.

e2eSoft also has VAC (Virutal Audio Cable) which we use to get the audio.
