i have getting increasingly pissed off by the lack of portable dvd players that support mkv and some of the other less common video encoding methods that are primarily used for anime and forign media.

i thing it would be a great idea to take a simple portable dvd player and write a vlc firmware for it preferable one of the ones that have sdhc slots. i would buy one in a heart beat if vlc made a good portable rom

Most likely not possible. Most portable media players only use hardware decoder chips for decoding. If they don't support format you need, there usually isn't anything you can do, since the regular CPU they use is WAY too slow for any video operations.

than why not design a vlc media player custom hardware custom firmware and market it it would raise alot of money for the project

That would require serious investments.

Good news is that Sigma is working on something related to this
