MP3 encoder (Lame), and other audio encoders, not only offers CBR (Constant Bit Rate) encoding, but also VBR (variable bit rate).

VBR option is NOT in the UI of VLC 1.06, while it's an option available in the command line.

An example of a good interface (notice as well the CRC option and possibility to choose Joint Stereo option), is the following.

This inferface could be shared for other codec wma, ogg, etc.

Hope to see it rapidely integrated, so that it will be in Ubuntu 10.10 flavours.

Did you check preferences -> all -> input/Codecs -> audio codecs for those options.

UI should also clarify whether a 0 value is a min or max in encoding quality (vorbis, etc....), the example of interface I showed is KISS, viz clear and without ambiguity or need to check in manual to whether 0 means high or low quality.
