So, I've just noticed an incompatibility.
To run videos that have japanese characters on it's file patch, I have to use the Windows feature of "Locale" on the VLC for it to work correctly with them.
But that's not part of my request, since I can get around it, but it would be nice to run these files natively on VLC.

Actually, my request is to make the character "〜" (the character between the " ") compatible with the VLC. Even with Locale to japanese, VLC acts strangely when this character is in the file's patch, so I guess it's not mapped at the same group as japanese characters.
If you can't see the character I've pasted in the line before, it's a "~", but longer, and it's used a lot on the name of japanese álbums and songs.

Windows version?

I have a similar problem. I have no problem opening & playing files with rare characters, but they don't show correctly in OSD - they render as squares. They show correctly on the title bar, however. My locale is set to Korean on an English version of windows, by the way.
And this may not be a vlc problem, but longfile names are shown correctly only when I drag & drop them from Windows explorer. If I double-click or press enter key on them, their names are shown as 8+3 DOS names.
