Skipper

Postby Aztek » 26 Feb 2010 21:43

This idea i'd like to call "skipper"

Could be used for movies, tv shows or music, just find your taste.
The releasers could include a skip file with their releases for the users convenience.

• usability
skip intros
skip outros
skip "on the previous episode"
skip ads

• how?
vlc + lua?
file based

example:

lol.avi
lol.skips

lol.avi is a video file with an intro at 00:00 to 00:15 and an outro at 09:45 to 10:00 and video ends at 10:00
lol.skips is a text file containing this example in plain text:

Code: Select all

lol.avi 00:00:00-00:00:15 00:09:45-00:10:00 -
Good idea or not ?

What about using chapters that are ALREADY in players?

are they easily implemented on any file type without editing the video/audio file itself (or converting it)

Well, you don't need to reencode, but you need to remux.

Well, you don't need to reencode, but you need to remux.
the feature request i am referring to would skip the selected parts automatically, so the user would load up a playlist, and the skips files get autoloaded (like subs) and the video plays, skipping the parts defined in the skips file.

this would mean i could load a playlist of 20 tv shows and watch them continuously throughout, without break (if i wanted to).

I would very much like this feature to be implemented -- it would be revolutionary. The file-format for this so-called "skipper" doesn't necessarily have to be as described by the original poster, you are free to use any standard you see fit.

With hope,
the poster of this post.

bumping the idea for more votes.

i still think this is a fantastic idea and should either be implemented in vlc or as a plugin.

Well if VLC supported MKV ordered chapters it would somewhat support what you are suggesting (and more). However it would however only work with MKV files and you would have to remux your files in MKV (no need for reencoding for most media files).
