Less onerous upgrade process

Postby mr-b » 01 Feb 2010 19:01

Hi

VLC is a great player but the upgrade process really seems clunky in comparison to the rest of the app.
First of all it interrupts me to download an updated version when I've just opened VLC to play something. Then if I do want to upgrade it asks me where to save the installer.
Really this kind of thing is much better off done in the background, and surely a default temporary location (browser download folder) could be used for the save location?

Then the actual upgrade involves having to uninstall VLC first, where I'm prompted about saving prefs etc. Then I have to install again and it errors out copying a .dll file if I have my browser open.
An in-place upgrade would be far less disruptive, inheriting preferences and is what most apps do these days.

Thanks for listening.

That would still fail on situation where your browser is using the VLC plugin.

Not so. I've seen many apps with browser plugins that prompt for the browser to be closed during upgrade, rather than just fail with some file write error.
It's a shame that the rest of VLC is let down by this aspect.
