With Quicktime it is possible to stop the movie. Then you can move singleton frames forward/backward by pressing <-/-> the cursor keys. By keeping the forward key pressed the movie is played in slow motion. This would as well be a good feature for VLC.

Thanks, but the 'e' hotkey is forward only. I'd really like to have also a backward frame key or button (I think it's really easy to implement). And also the slow motion would be a nice feature.

There isn't backward frame in VLC.
