Much more subtitle options

Hi!
I'd like to request some subtitle options. VLC is the best player, but it has such few subtitle options. I'd like the following things:
- Change the color of the sub
- Change the border width
- Change the border color
- Transparent/Background color
- Position
- Shadow
- Bold/Itallic...
- Allignment
I think these are all.

And ability to push the subs down the blackbar...

All these things require major changes to our video core. We want them too (that's why they are on the TODO list), but we only have limited human resources, so this may still take a long time.

These options are VERY important. Maybe not for those people speaking fluently English, but fot not-english speakers, subtitles are the main thing.
things like shadow, italics, color are maybe not so important, but I think the opotion to make subtitles thicker / bigger / with thicker border is needful. That's because subtitles are completely non-readable.
In version 0.7.2 (win) they were MUCH MUCH better, with no strange transparency. Maybe there is a way (or could be in future) to make subs to look like old, good 0.7.2 ones? Please, reply.
Bye

what about adding an option to show closed caption for the hearing impared? yes i know most DVD's have english sub titles but several DVD's do not have english subtitles but DO have closed captioning. my deaf sister finds it very annoying when she wants to watch one of these movies and cant... just a suggestion

People. It's open source. if you want something so damn bad, write it yourself. We are not the "we do work for free forces".
If you cannot appreciate the way Free Software is made and produced then use something else and PAY for that.
In my opinion...

I think the hole thread is out of focus... I do agree that question about subtitles is a problem (indeed, that's the only reason for me to use other players), but you got to ask nicely. I think a proper maner of saying is:
"How many donations you need to start development of that feature?"
I think we can start a campaign in order to have the funds for you guys...
And above all: I think you do a wonderful work!

I'd personally love to see gabest's textsub/vobsub implementation make it in. SSA is the standard for the more serious subtitling groups, and Gabest's implementation is what those groups use.
I understand that there is a very practical portion to the volunteerism that goes into this project, and I'll state right here and now that I'll donate $200 to the project upon the implementation of Gabest's textsub/vobsub. This may be the only way that linux and OSX get proper subtitles.

the problem about gabest Vobsub implementation is that it HEAVILY relies on windows. it's not portable at all, and therefore not acceptable for VLC. We will need to start from scratch. And it will take weeks of almost fulltime work i suspect.

However, one thing is true: the "new" subtitle outlining is much worse than the previous ones. Subtitles look translucent, are much less readable. I think gibalou changed that but some more work is needed (and should not be too hard)

Have you evaluated Avery Lee's subtitle filter for suitability? While it's almost certainly X86 centric, it's meant to interface with his virtualdub, and may not be nearly as windows-centric.

I just checked the source for this and it only uses ASM for borders and shadows.

Typical bonehead response. BSplayer handles subs just fine and that's free software. Instead of throwing out insults make your software better.

BSplayer is a windows only software. Then you have quite different restraints.
