The slower button should be THE rewind button!

Im very confused why the slower button is not a rewind button!

I dont see any everyday use for a slower button but to go back a minute or two is something I need regularly and can only do by clumsily moving the play head. And then you dont have a play normal speed button , play/pause dosnt do it, this is so crazy!!!

Also all the backwards , slow medium and long short cuts do nothing in version 1.0.0

ps I love VLC

Hello semiconductor , how are you today :)

I support this overall, but only as an option which can be enabled/disabled for the Fast-Forward and Rewind. For me I just use the right and left keys to ffwd / rwd as I do on all media players. Myself Im satisfied with them controls as the playback speed ontrol on each end and I occasionally click to use them.

So an option should be added in Preferences>Video to modify these controls to ffwd / rwd in that same way as a convenient enhancement. The modifier option could add some type of drop menu for each of the two for consider following :

Very short forward jump
Very short backward jump

Short forward jump
Short backward jump

Medium backward jump
Medium forward jump

Long backward jump
Long forward jump

.... Maybe also additional option right next to this for each for the next & prev of DVD chapter and DVD title jumping also.

By shortcuts Im asuming you mean by pressing the right and left keyboard keys that I mentioned above.

You have to go to Preferences>Hotkeys and enable them as the right and left keys don't do this by default. I enable the 'Short forward' and 'Short backward' as this is the best jump naviagation for me on most of my media files. Enable them and restart VLC to use :) Or did you mean something else in this quote?

There is no rewind button in VLC, because VLC cannot rewind...

And you can customize toolbars in 1.0 and put the buttons you want, where you want.

But VLC rewinds and fast-forwards when you Hold the left or right keys when those keys are assigned or do you mean something else

Of course it can rewind!
Maybe not smoothly but thats not the issue.

The shortcut keys all send me back to the start of the video and forward does nothing.

So theres no point in setting them up in a custom gui.

Sorry if i sound ungreatly. its really my only bug bear, honest

Seeking != rewind.

Rewind is basically playing something in reverse, and VLC indeed cannot do that.

Take 1.0.0, view, customize toolbar and change the rewind button by the seeking backward button.

There, fixed for you.

There are times when I'm watching a film, and I've missed something, and I'd like to quickly look back. It would be easier to find the part I was looking for by rewinding that it is using the backwards jumps.

Tried:
shift+left and shift+right (3 seconds jump behind/forward)
alt+left and alt+right (10 seconds jump behind/forward)
ctrl+left and ctrl+right (1 minute jump behind/forward)

VLC probably can't rewind (also, it can't go to previous frame) but the jump behind along with play slower and next frame (e key) should do the trick.

If rewinding can't be done, a good feature request would be to put the 3 seconds jump buttons (forward/backward) in the default toolbar, so users can find them easily. It should be very easy to do. Sony dvd recorders have a similar function, and I find it much more convinient that waiting for the movie to rewind, if you just want to find something you missed.

And why not add an 1 second or even a half second jump behind button? This is how some standalone DVD players trick the user into thinking they 've got rewind. They just do a very small jump/seek behind repeatedly, and presto, rewind! And why not add a seek function for the previous frame? Like the "next frame" function? This should do a proper rewind if done repeatedly.
