You can already do that with VLC for ages (at least with 0.5.0, which is already almost 2 years old). Just open the vob-files or (if you want support for subtitles, menus, etc.) the Video_TS folder.

Sorry, but I must disagree with Fkuehne reply.
Up to VLC 0.7.2 you could open VIDEO_TS (putting the full directory name instead of the drive letter only) and that worked ok.
In VLC 0.8.2 that feature is not working anymore.
All audio tracks are unknown, all chapters are unknown, etc.
At least in Windows version.

I didn't try 0.7.2, but on the windows versions of 0.8.0 and 0.8.1 the menus and navigation did not work either for reading dvds from the hard drive. However, on the 0.8.0 linux version, with those dvds on the hard drive shared from the windows box and mounted to linux, the linux vlc client did populate the navigation pull down with the separate chapters and, if I recall, the menus worked there too.

DVD menus work just fine here on windows (with 0.8.1) by drag&dropping the image file or VIDEO_TS folder onto VLC.

Actually no, you're right. I was trying my cygwin build of VLC 0.8.1. This one does work without a hitch.
It appears though that the official 0.8.1 binary can't play VIDEO_TS folders (it can play image files though) so it seems there is a build problem there. I'll investigate this.

Hi guys,
I just wanted to say thanx. I also could not find out how to start DVD-copies on my hard disk. I could only start the *.vob files without sound etc. But I never thought about starting the DVD by just dragging&dropping the whole folder on VLC.
Thanx again - what a great proggie,
Wiesel

Whow, same here!
I got VLC Player installed on my new PC, never noticed it before
To be honest, I like it!

But is there a possibillity to get rid of Microsoft Media player?
(I already disabled starting up in gpedit.msc, but doesn't keep the damm thing to try to start anyway.)

What I do:
I open "this computer" and see a dvd.
Normally I would double-click that to start.
When I do so, that fooking Mediaplayer wants to be set up.

Ok, I could right-click to open it with VLC, but the thing that bothers me is dat mediaplayer is still in the list, although I prefered VLC.
Where and how to change this in XP-Pro SP2?

Get it??
THX.

For DVD autoplay, see:

(I thought the missing quotes was corrected in the 0.8.1 self-installer for VLC on Windows, must have been wrong [else you have an older version])
