Playback Speed wtihout pitch change

Hi,
I love VLC! Thanks for all your hard work everyone!
I was curious to see if there has been discussion or there are plans of implementing better playback speed control that gives finer grained increases/decreases in speed and also does not affect pitch.
What would it take to get that feature added?
Is it difficult? I am not a programmer, yet, but I might be able to pitch in some cash if someone wanted to give me an idea of how difficult this would be.
Thanks

I thought I should clarify on playback speed granularity.
It appears that the current "play faster" speed is about 2x. It would be nice to have 1.25x, 1.50x and 1.75x and 2x.
I am watching a lot of training videos for Drupal right now and some speakers are very slow while others are much faster, I follow faster speakers better with combination of the pause button.
There are all sorts of speakers that very from turtle to crackhead and it would be nice to adjust them all to my level of desired comprehension.
Thanks for reading this request.

I found the "scaletempo" audio filter in VLC. How do I use it? Is there documentation on this?
I don't understand all the ins and outs of VLC yet.

Ok, I figured it out.
For anyone else who wants to do this in windows, VLC 0.9.9.
* Go to preferences (ctrl+p)
* Under "show settings" at the very bottom of the left column, make sure "All" is selected.
* Next expand the audio branch of the tree
* Then click "filters" and check off "scale audio tempo in sync with playback rate
* Optional - Go to audio>filters>Scaletempo and change "Stride Length" to 100. I did this on accident before I found out you have to enable the filter as described above. It appears to make it sound a bit smoother on faster playback on the mp3 and ogg video I tested. If someone could expand further upon why this is that would be great. I could definitely hear a difference between the default of "30" and "100".
Note - You must restart VLC for any of these changes to take effect.
Edit - ***"Stride Length" changes may make VLC unstable. 100 keeps crashing my ogg test video but 30 does not.

I can't get this to work with a .avi file that has audio "MPEG Audio Layer 1/2/3 (mpga)", whereas scaletempo works fine with a .mkv with DTS audio.
Why is this and how can I keep the pitch for mpeg audio?
Thanks.
