At least 0.9.8a and 1.0.0 have the vumeter. There isn't any GUI option for it. It is part of Vizualizer plugin. So to enable it, insert text vuMeter to Effects list.

I think vumeter has the level already so one would just need to print as number instead of drawing it as angled line.

Or something like that to avoid the boring fake LED's that we can see everywhere:

I agree with coobox. I'd like a bar meter include-able in the video window - perhaps even with silence detect.
Si.

Hi guys,
I'm wondering if anyone has made a start developing an audio VU-Meter overlay plugin? If so, I'm keen to join the effort, otherwise I may start.
I've had a quick look at the code in modules/video_filter & modules/audio_filter and these look like a good place to start. Is it possible for a filter module to extend the size of the video frame? Or is straight overlay the only option?
What features would be useful?
- Position/orientation
- Size
- Colours (including different segments)
- Peak/over hold
- Ballistics/response rate
- Others?
Will building this module mean it's possible to use it from one of the Web-Browser plugins? For example, is it possible to overlay a logo in the Moz plugin right now? Is this an <embed> parameter?
Cheers,
ChrisB

See modules/visualization/visual/ for the current Vu meter. This is an audio filter that creates a vout. In order to overlay this, you would need it to render a frame as a sub-filter, like the logo.c filter in modules/video_filter/.
So far, we have no audio filter that does sub-filter behaviour, so beyond this, it's uncharted territory. I'm not even sure if it is possible atm.
