Well, I noticed the same problem.
Some DVD-Menus don't work with VLC.

But after changing to another DVD-player it works fine.

So I belive that's a hardware problem.

LG DVD 8160B don't work and Pioneer A05 no problems!

I'm using Matshita drive on my PowerMac G4.
Thinking to change my drive into DVD writer.

IMHO it's not a hardware problem.
There're some dvd's menus that don't work with VLC here in windows but work in PowerDVD... so I think it's a fault of VLC.

Just to confirm this IS a VLC issue; some menus won't operate properly,or sometimes partially.
For instance, executing the "play the movie" command would lend to a crash, but selecting the first chapter from scenes list would be OK and launch the film normally.

Just to clarify things, we are aware that our DVD menus support is a bit flaky.
However there are plans to rewrite this part of the code after 0.7.0 is out.

flaky it is

Love your player 8)

I use it for anything *BUT* DVDs, as they crash the player. Especially the menus kill it.

Sure, I can play the .VOB files one by one, but you know...

I'm on VLC 0.7.2 on a Win2000, Service pack 4

DVD menus support is supposed to be _a lot_ better in the development version (nightly builds available at http://www.videolan.org/~videolan/).
