Better support for mono output
Posted: 18 Oct 2008 17:03
by Wilfried
Hello there,
In reference to
my other post, I'd like to see some better support for mono output, e.g., the possibility to generelly limit output to mono (downmixed from stereo/multichannel), and to set one of the available channels as the only output channel (I think this option is already available).
Also, the Audio Device setting (Stereo/Mono) should be kept once selected. Currently, the player switches back to Stereo each time a new track is played.
Thanks,
Wilfried

Audio -> Audio Device is at least under Windows selected same as the current Windows speaker mode. I can add force mono option if you want one.

Please do so.
I figured out that setting speaker mode to mono in Windows' Audio Setup doesn't work for VLC, as it bypasses the Windows settings. They're weak anyway so a Force Mono option would be fine.
Thanks a lot,
Wilfried

Could open Tools -> Messages... (set Verboisty to 2) before playback and after opening the file, press pause and paste log here (I am interested at line aout_directx debug: Windows says your SpeakerConfig is...).

I also had the same problem, fixed with the following command line:
Now Mono keeps on through tracks.
Also, thanks VLC for this... I've been searching for centuries.

Any way to select Downmix to mono on Mac OS X?
I see in VLC's "Audio Channels" that there's "Stereo", "Left", "Right" and "Reverse Stereo" but no Downmix to Mono :-S
Any help?
I see that there's a fix for Windows with the directx thing, but... is it very difficult to include this feature on the GUI? (Win, Linux and Mac)

No. It just seems nobody wants to create proper downmix/upmix/balance filter.

Aham, understood. I thought that the downmix to mono was just a trivial thing. I guess it's not then. Well... that's that then :-)

It is quite easy to do, when you have stereo input, but e.g. with 5.1 input some options would be nice, since not all want same balance for vocal or LFE channel.

And would it be possible to make one for stereo input for now? If the source isn't 2.0 then have it grayed out, and then un-grey it for 5.1 whenever the 5.1 filter is finished.

I still have this problem. The left speaker on my Acer Aspire one quit working, which seems to be common on the AspireOneUser forums. I have to set it to mono with each instance and after each file/media change. The properties in the Control Panel are set to "Laptop Mono Speaker," which doesn't do a darn thing for apps. For instance, moving thebalance slider in Windows works more like a right-channel volume slider as there is no left channel! A YouTube stereo test confirms that Windows does not combine and that I still have no left channel audio.
It seems like a lot of settings or customizations don't stick like they should. For example, you could size, crop, and position an always-on-top window in your workspace just right when playing a DVD and as soon as it hits a chapter or branch it goes back to the wrong size and shape. For example, you can crop to get rid of letterboxing and set it to half or quarter size and then expand it a little to use the space you have available on your screen (I'm sharing screen real-estate with an alarm monitoring app I have to watch at work), and then everything will just pop back when playback crosses into a new chapter or you switch files/tracks.

This was done without touching the stereo/mono setting. Should I also set mono, skip, and check again?

I also had the same problem, fixed with the following command line:
Now Mono keeps on through tracks.
Also, thanks VLC for this... I've been searching for centuries.
It works when I add it to a shortcut or launch from the command line, but how can I make sure that it applies the command line switches no matter how I execute it, like through context-sensitive Explorer menu, associated files, and launching the program first? Am I going to have to edit the registry for each and every association, the contect menus, etc? At least it's easy enough to make a shortcut for launching the program first.
When I want to play an album, especially one sourced from a multi-disc album, I right-click the folder and tell it to "Play with VLC media player." How can I do that and have VLC function as if I had used this switch?

Tools -> Preferences... (Show settings: All) Audio -> Output modules -> DirectX and Select speaker configuration.

Thanks! I've had trouble finishing the latest OCREMIX album because of this.

Hi.
I guess I am in the same fix as the other folks who want support for forced mono output
And making it go both ways (i.e. either channel can be the active listening channel on both speakers).
The latest update took away the Mono function from the interface and I truly miss it.
If it was there before it can't be much trouble to just put it back....hmmmmm?
I can live with VLC as it is until the next update, but please re-add the forced mono function.
Thanks
