Remote Control Volume Support

I wanted to throw the idea out there for the following request-
In Mac OS X, there is remote control support. It is a wonderful thing!
I was wondering if when using the volume from the remote, after maxing out the VLC volume, can it increase the system volume?
When I am sitting at the computer its no big deal making the system volume louder, but when I am on the couch and the system volume is low, I need to get up to adjust the volume.
Some other ideas for solving the issue:
*VLC could not pay attention to the system volume and the max could always be the max.
*VLC could adapt the system volume as its volume
*VLC could use both, and have a control something like when using a digital camera, the zoom feature often distinguishes between optical and digital zoom. (different colour in the slider bar when switching between the two)
You guys may have a better idea or know the best way to implement this.
