Closed Captions Question

Postby Susanna777 » 26 Jun 2008 01:10

Hi, I'm new here, and decided to join to get an important question answered. I switched to Ubuntu Linux over two months ago and I'm hard of hearing.

Does VLC support closed captions or not? If it does how do I turn them on when I'm watching DVDs? If it doesn't, when will closed caption support be available? I did a search on this forum, but still didn't get a clear answer.

Two more things that aren't as important:
1) Can there be an option for VLC to "remember" to have subtitles on? Every time I restart the player, I have to turn the subtitles back on.
2) How do I set it up so that when I put a DVD in, VLC automatically starts and opens the DVD?

Other than those things, I love VLC and its interface more so than any DVD player, except for Windows Media Player (b/c it displays captions!)

If VLC can't display captions, then is there any other dvd player for linux that does? I can't seem to find any and it's very frustrating as some DVDs only have CC and I prefer CC anyway.

You are not clear... Closed captions != Subtitles.

DVD are using subtitles. TV streams are using closed captions.

VLC supports subtitles but not yet closed captions (next release will).

You can activate the subtitles throught the video menu.
There are no standard for subtitles track names, so you will have to reenable those every time.

I know they are not the same. Most DVDs have subtitles and closed captions. However some DVDs do not have subtitles, only closed captions. I need to be able to watch those DVDs too.

Any idea when the next release is?

So closed captions will be supported in version 0.9?

How do you upgrade the media player on ubuntu 8.04 or I have to wait for an automatic update?

You can test nightlies. Or wait until 0.9.0 reaches stable.
