The only way VLC could ever play Realmedia is by using MPlayer. Maybe an option to use mplayer with formats not supported by vlc. cross-platform soultion.
Yes, I know there is much more to it than that, just an idea.

Both MPlayer an VLC use the FFmpeg codecs libraries. The RealVideo codecs RV10 and RV20 are in libavcodec (part of the FFmpeg project).

Also, the features page states (see here):
VLC's 0.9.0 release will introduce support for RV30 and RV40 based upon the additions to the FFmpeg-library by one their Google Summer of Code 2007 projects.
