Virtual media files?

Next step would also be the facility to create virtual media files: a file with the same media resource name but with added custom extension (e.g. "gigi.avi.vmf) containing mark-in/mark-out points associated to index numbers and descriptions, so that you can insert a piece of media in a playlist, browsing either by index or description.
