A Laymans biggest complaint

Not being an expert in media software, programming, or even a massive computer-video addict, I can only find one real problem with VLC worth complaining about. Other than this, its perfect for my needs and wants (so far). When in full screen mode, most players allow a seeking/searching/scrolling bar to pop up with a mouse move to a side of the screen, or something along those lines, to change the time-position of the video. VLC requires one to close the full screen window and do it from the player itself. If only for efficiency, and the quest for perfection, I request that this feature be added to VLC.

Thank you, my dear programmers, for providing us with something so darned amazing and useful, for free...

Yes, I feel exactly the same way.

Both the "thanks a million" part and the "where's my slider?" part.

it's in project, but nobody started working on it yet.
in fullscreen you can use the hotkeys {ctrl, alt, shift} left/right to shift the position

I knew that but that serves very limited function. But thanks for being interested. Are you one of the heroic programmers, funman? What do you mean its on project?

yes i'm in the developer team

fullscreen controls is an idea present for a long time now, and may, or may not come in some time ;)

it depends of the task complexity, and the developers motivation.

AFAIK it already exists on macosx, and may be developed on linux, but i don't know any win32 developer interested into doing that feature atm :/

maybe the use of new qt4 interface will permit to do one time the job, and it will work on both windows and linux ;)

edit: I use Win2k Pro. & Win2kServer.

I'm glad to know about the hotkeys. I gave up trying when there was no default for unmodified left and right.

BTW, I regularly use GOMplayer; VLCplayer is my backup. GOMplayer has a settable option for the default length of jumps with only the left and right arrow keys. But even in my old version of WinAMP the left-right keys have a default value of a 10" jump. So I have been long accustomed to using the left-right arrow keys like this.

But I didn't know about combining the arrow keys. After hearing of the usage in VLCplayer, I opened something in GOMplayer, and sure enough, Shift+arrow etc. made jumps of different lengths, heheh. Nice to know!

Back to the current state of the VLC project-- Are the hotkey values easy to modify? I can do without a slider, but I'd like to have a default value of 10 seconds on the left-right keys. Or even as a settable value would also be good.

Whatever the case, I need the capability of a one-handed 10" jump. Most of the media I use are lectures, so I am literally writing on paper/whiteboard or holding a printed book, and not always simply using another program for word processing. (That jump is about the amount of time for a missed word or phrase, and holding the button down for a whole minute's worth of time is pretty quick.)

Well, that's my story, for what it is worth. If you make this change, it would cool and convenient, but I still do fine with my current habits.

Thanks again,
/t

trracy, are you using the nightly build?

If you are, try preference --> (show all settings)--> Interface-->hotkey settings. Here you can change the jump sizes and hotkeys.

According to WordWeb Dictionary,
Noun: hero (heroes) hi(u)row:-
1. A man distinguished by exceptional courage and nobility and strength
"RAF pilots were the heroes of the Battle of Britain"
2. The principal character in a play or movie or novel or poem
3. Someone who fights for a cause
4. (classical mythology) a being of great strength and courage celebrated for bold exploits; often the offspring of a mortal and a god
5. [N. Amer] A large sandwich made of a long crusty roll split lengthwise and filled with meats and cheese (and tomato and onion and lettuce and condiments); different names are used in different sections of the United States
6. (Greek mythology) priestess of Aphrodite who killed herself when her lover Leander drowned while trying to swim the Hellespont to see her
7. Greek mathematician and inventor who devised a way to determine the area of a triangle [the 'v' in VLC] and who described various mechanical devices (first century)

The programmers of VLC player fit all of these categories unquestionably (well, 6. is questionable)...

Was wondering whats going on with full-screen controls? any updates? Also, would it be too much to ask, if I were to ask someone to program frame skipping? when taking snapshots, it can be hard to get the right bit, especially with that lag that comes often after pausing it. if we could pause it then move forward/backward individual frames, that would be awesome.

sorry if that is a request that has been made before, but i really kanne be bothered to read the whole darned forum.
