Stay with selected audio device

I think this is more of a bug than a feature request, but I'll give it a shot.
I use vlc to play HDTV mpeg recorded tv shows.
These tv shows have 5.1 surround sound audio
during the 'show' part and drop down to standard,
stereo audio during commercials.
When I'm watching a show, I select 5.1 surround
sound and start watching the show. The commercial
comes in and the audio drops back down to stereo.
The 'show' part starts playing again and I stay in
stero mode and have to manually select 5.1 again.
If I select 5.1... I should not have to KEEP selecting
5.1 on the same .mpeg file. I want to select 5.1 and
have it STICK.
