File Association

Hi,

I think it would be great if VideoLan had File Association option in Preferences so you can reassociate file types with VideoLan if some other application messes it up (eg. Winamp).

I second that, many programs steal association and it's tideous to redownload the installation of VNC to reassociate it.

(I found this thread with the search engine, while I already wrote my post, so it might seem like a new topic's post)

My point is about file associations, and how is customizible in VLC media player.
I realized that the only way for VLC media player to associate with file types is through the installation process, after that there is no way through the program to manage them. The only way is to manually go in Windows' Folder Options that is in Control Panel, and then in the section File Types.
This may require some knowledge about the process itself, and sometimes, some softwares (as Nero ShowTIme did for me), even after being uninstalled, still cause problems and mess us the associations system in the registry of Windows, and require a deep and precise registry clean to actually work (just delete everything related to that specific extension, then manually set it again).
The idea I had is from the good example of Winamp: a preference pane with selectable file associations to enable/disable associations with VLC, that can eventually apply changes instantly (or at the start of the program) for the file associations.
I think this would be a great idea and essential feature, especially for the Windows side. (I don't know about Linux or others, but on OSX is quite easy to change file associations, but still would be good to have a centralized preference pane).

thanks

See the following snapshot which is the (not main, not one of some... but...) THE ONLY reason why I'm using WinRAR as my default file compression and NOT the great and lovely 7-Zip (I registered to WinRAR also only because of this!) - I need to associate .xpi (Firefox Extensions) and others (and I want a Native association, and not a Win M$ association style!)

I wish that I could associate .flv, .xspf and also mms:// etc. etc. (VLC style - M$ style sucks!)

So, looking at bug ticket 763 (http://trac.videolan.org/vlc/ticket/763), am I to assume that this issue has been resolved, and now it is a feature in 0.9.0? Is that what "milestone changed from 0.9.0 bugs to 0.9.0 features freeze" means?

If so where is it? I'm using 0.9.2 and I don't see it.

menu Tools > Settings > Interface > Instances > File associations: Association Setup

thank you very much!

now VLC media player is much closer to perfection!
