Provide Simpler UI for Streaming: Use Profiles

Hi there,

I already used VLC quite a lot and tried streaming to our LAN a couple of times, but although I used the manual from the homepage and the settings seem to be straight forward, it so often just didn't work. Not that it was hard to establish a stream to be broadcasted, but to find the right combination of transcoders a.s.o. so it would play on WMP or Media Player Calssic instead of using VLC as a client - Not everybody has VLC installed on his/her computer.

So what I would propose is to provide, so called 'Profiles'. Selecting a profile would select the right combination of encoders (cache...) to suit a certain task, eg. a Profile could be called 'WMP Client 384kbit upload'. This profile would already then be proven to run on WMP.

The UI would then only consist of following Items

Code: Select all

+---------------------------------------------------------------+ | | | Profile: |_WMP 384kbit_______|+| [Change Parameters] | | Source:|_MyVideo.avi_______|+| | | | | | | Use this URL for your WMP client | | http://myserver.com:1234/Stream.wmv | | | | [Start>][Cancel] | | | +---------------------------------------------------------------+
The most improtant Profiles would be preconfigured. For advanced settings [Change Parameters] could be used. Additional Profile could also be created.

We've already started developing streaming profiles in the developement version of VLC :) you must be a mind reader. (Good to know that we're heading in the right direction)
