Launching Videolan from a web browser

Hi, guys
I was wondering if, in future releases it will be possible to launch VLC Player from a web page link without waiting for the entire content to download. What I am thinking of is a metafile à la RealNetworks .ram or Quicktime .qtl.
Any ideas?
