Yes exactly. Keybindings that works globally, ie I can change volym, skip to next etc, anywhere in windows.
Both winamp and foobar has them.

VLC has them too. In preferences: General->Hotkeys

But those hotkeys only works when vlc is selected.
Global hotkeys works even if I'm typing in word or gaming etc.
Hence the global :D

I join this feature request.

In winamp it's one of the most usefull features.

No need to stop whatever you do and put the players' window in focus to play/stop/change volume etc, just press a hotkey (in winamp they are all alt+ctrl+<key>) and continue your work.

I'd love that as well. I have two monitors set up and regularly watch something on one and broswe the web on the other. In such case the browser is the active app and VLC is in the background. I'd love to be able to use the shortcuts without switching back to VLC.

I join this feature request too. I'd give VLC many new possibilities...

Global hotkeys? Sheesh, I'd be happy if the skip forward in time and skip back in time keys (besides the 10 second ones) still worked when the controller is the top window instead of only working when the video window is on top. Maybe I should post a new thread asking for this.

Global hotkeys would indeed be nice, they have my vote too,

However, I would also like to be able to configure my own shortcut keys, so I can for example use my tv cards remote to control vlc using its play / pause etc buttons if that was implemented too it would be great :-)

This would be awesome. It would completely make VLC player the only media player I ever need. Especially if you could map them to additional keyboard hotkeys which are configurable with the keyboard software (Winamp and WMP do this)

Global Hotkeys should be standard in all media players. Its my only reason i miss winamp. I wish itunes would implement it. Until thend VLC yea Add em I use u to listen to music while i game

The problem how i see it is that it'd be completely different code to support this on all the different platforms (and i do not know if you can do this using gtk or wxwidgets or whatever vlc uses for their linux thing, unless x windows is all you need), but i would also appreciate it if this worked.

In the mini projects they talk about using dbus. This would do the global hotkey thing for gnome (and maybe kde xfce etc), as you can bind hotkeys to CLI commands, thus you should be able to pass DBUS messages to vlc by calling the right executable + switches from gnome using gnome's global hotkey support (but they call it something else).

And that's about all i can guess about. Still this'd be great!
