What they are trying to say is this.

U3.com has been working with thumbdrive companies to create a totally portable solution for programs. The problem is that the utility used to launch apps, that U3 has created, does not allow for user additions of programs they wish to use that already just run out of their own directory. Creators of those softwares have to package their application in a specific way for use in the launch application.

Has any thought been put into creating a version of VLC for use with the U3 start application?

No such thought has occured.
You have to see that with just a few developers out there, and about 300 types of non-standard OSes and install situations out there, it's impossible to develop and support all that. Support requires active contribution of the users of the platform.

Ergo, if no one actively using such a device is gonna package the source, then there simply won't be a release for such a platform.
Anyone is welcome to download the source, compile VLC and package it appropriately. Hell, you can probably take the precompiled VLC and run a couple of scripts on it to become such a U3 package.

However if noone is gonna build those scripts and maintain them, then it's just not gonna happen.

This is exactly what I came here looking for. I guess I don't need the launchpad feature. I will have to find out hoe to just unzip it to my usb drive, the vlc player file I downloaded is an installer package, not just a zip.

Then you should download the .zip version.

(There are two links on the downloadpage for windows. one installer, one .zip)

I must be blind, I just don't see it.

I see the windows one, a bunch for linux, some others like WinCE. But I don't see the ZIP. I will keep looking I guess. Thanks

until I found this link http://www.elitenews.org/2006/05/instal ... drive.html in this forum, ( havent tried it yet) I used Pstart http://www.pegtop.de/start/ For U3, and set it to auto start when U3 is open, then had open office auto start from that.

it creates alot of menus, but a was able to launch everthing from the system tray.

For those who don't want to bother messing with .u3p files hoping to get it to work, and most likely failing, I have a premade file available. It is based on VLCPortable. The GUID for this file in particular is completely random and is only there to make VLC work right with U3. The GUID could have been literally anything as long as it was completely capitalized, and only numbers and letters using the 8-4-4-4-12 format that U3 uses. The description can only be up to 140 characters, so it isn't the same as the one from the VLC website. This file SHOULD work properly with your U3 devices assuming you have around 20MB free space. Here is how it appears under the U3 interface (as set by a custom manifest file):

Code: Select all

Icon: VLC Cone Icon Name: "VLC Media Player" Version: "0.8.6c" Aplication U3 GUID: "4C24CF38-771B-4B2F-B665-6C77E980DCA5" Vendor URL: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ Vendor Name: VideoLAN Description: "VLC media player is a portable multimedia player for various audio and video formats. This version for U3 is based on VLCPortable."
