I really need to have a playcount feature built into the VLC program.

Writing one's own lua extension is a bit much for a standard feature that should be available by standard.

It is frustrating not to be able to email anyone about this and instead having to create an account on a forum I'll never use.

It exists within the playlist. it is the column labeled "ID"
