Limited functionality - Impossible for mouse wheel to adjust playback speed

VLC media player for Mac has very limited functionality compared to the version for PC. The advanced preferences menu has a lot less options. But I don't care about the rest. I want only one:
I want to be able to change the hotkeys for playback speed ("Faster" and "Slower") so that instead of ⌘- and ⌘= that they are now, they become "Mouse Wheel Up" and "Mouse Wheel Down".
I've done this in my PC version and it is the best way for advancing a movie to the desired point without skipping ahead and losing content.
However on the Mac it is impossible. The preferences do not "understand" this mouse gesture, so it cannot be assigned to the playback speed. You can only set the "Mouse wheel vertical axis control" to "Position control", but this advances your movie without sound and with significant loss of content as it jumps a few seconds forward.
I am very sad that VLC discriminates against Mac users! Functionality should be identical between Mac and PC!
PS. 4 days ago I also posted this in "VLC media player for Mac OS X Troubleshooting" but received no reply.
