cue file wav not ape

I notice that some downloaded .cue files point to a .wav file with WAVE afterwards, while the downloaded file is .ape for example and will not play when loading the cue.
Maybe I understand something wrong, but could VLC fall back to play the similarly named .ape or .flac file in the directory instead of giving missing .wav error message?

What about editing your CUE files with a simple text editor ?

Notice that the word "WAVE" at the end of the line is required.
