I use VLC snapshot very often.

Would it be possible to change the snapshot loaction to the same directory as the movie it is playing.
For example:
When playing movie "xlawnmower" located in: D/mymovies/2016/moviexlawnmower
Then save all snapshots to directory: D/mymovies/2016/moviexlawnmower

Now I make the snapshots, find them and copy them to relevant video folder every time again.

That's a good idea. Create a bugreport.

I have a hack for this. It is not perfect.

Directory = $N$path.png
Prefix=$N

There is an extra "ath" in the path but its good enough for me.

The png saves to the same directory as the video and has the same name but with the .png extension.

You cannot write on CDs, DVDs, and write protected SD cards, etc.

I personally do not want to write to CDs, DVDs, and write protected SD cards.

I would like an option to have the screenshot saved automatically to whatever directory the video file is in. See OP above.

Another 13 months go by and nothin.. this is such an obvious thing to provide as an option guys.. really find it weird it's not getting any love. Am I surrounded by those weird people who use "My Pictures"?!

Yeah, my hack no longer works.

I use sm player. It's better than vlc. It will save the snapshot to the same location as the video.

What could possibly go wrong... user or VLC app might have read-only permission to the directory, or it might not even be a mounted file system. That "feature" is easy to implement. But it would be a PITA to support.

The folks at sm player got it to work. If a dvd is screenshot, they save it to an error directory.

Seems to me, the above concern could be avoided fairly easily:

whenever screenshot function is executed by user, do the following, in order:
1. attempt to save to the location where the video is (assuming user has set up VLC to do so)
2. if 1. is not possible, save to a fixed, default directory set up in VLC options (i.e. what can be done now already)
3. if 2. is not possible, save to default directory set up by the OS (e.g. "My Pictures" in newer Windows).
