Refresh media library

Upon adding a directory to the media library, any file additions or changes to the directory in the filesystem afterwards are not reflected in its counterpart in the media lib. It seems the only ways to see these changes are to manually add/delete the changes or delete the entire directory in the media library and add again. This is really not good, can we get an option to refresh the media library that can just look up the contents of the directory again as is done when you first add it?

This sucks, I have the same concern and no matter where I search for answers, I can't seem to find a working answer.

The following works for me on a Mac 10.9.5 and VLC 2.2.1:
1) Delete the file ~/Library/Application Support/org.videolan.vlc/ml.xspf
This contains the list of all your songs. If you don't want to leap without a net, then just rename the file so you can restore it later.
2) Reload your iTunes library using "File -> Open File". Then browse to your iTunes folder that ends in ".../iTunes Media/Music". This is the parent folder that contains all the folders named for your album artists. Then click on Open.
That will reload your iTunes directory tree and any updates, and recreate ml.xspf.
