It's not possible to integrate it in the normal VLC, since there is no SDK for desktops.

Perhaps an extension could be made for Chrome that would hook VLC into the Chrome SDK?

VLC was the first thing I thought of when I saw ChromeCast annoucement. I thought... if only VLC supports GoogleCast SDK it would be the holy grail of digital viewing from my desktop.

Basically I want this player that can handle pretty much any content I can throw at it from multiple sources to enable an easier viewing experience for content originating from the PC.

But I am starting to see. The chromecast device is basically a slimmed down browser.

And I guess VLC is not in the right place in the pipeline to do the job? Unless it were a web-wrapped player inside a chrome browser?

Right now I'm stuck using my PS3 as a viewer for TV and the best I can do is one of the many transcoders that sit on the PC and serve content so the PS3 requires no apps on its end.

I would love to not have to have a dual monitor display to watch shows from various digital formats.

Connecting the hdmi out from my pc never works for users in our situation because we are doing other things on the PC at the same time as watching a movie. Browsing, playing a game, reading mail, whatever.

So maybe its' not ChromeCast we need. The wireless seems problematic anyway for HD content.

I thought the same thing but really all thats needed is a fix to the vlc youtube chrome extension so that we can use it for all video.. If we can get that then we can broadcast straight from chrome and that would even work with videos stored locally on my computer because all you have to do is copy/paste the path to video on your computer and it will play on the chrome browser. It would be perfect

Chromecast can already play back local files when opened within the Chrome browser. See here:

You can but some files don't seem to play properly though. Like Avi files.
