Make audio track default to English

Postby DrHow » 25 Sep 2012 20:00

For some reason, the files I record from my local Fox station have the English audio track as track 2; but VLC always defaults to track 1. (Track 1 may be announcerless, which was really confusing at first. When track 1 is Spanish, I catch on quickly; but it is still a hassle.) Other players seem to be able to notice which track is English and default to that track automatically. I wish that VLC could do the same - or, at least, provide an option by which it could.

In the Fox case, Track 1 is labeled on the selection menu as "Espanol" and Track 2 is labeled as "English". In the cases I have encountered most often for the defaulted-to Track 1 (mostly college football), there are no announcers - only background sound. I believe that, for an NFL game, I did hear Spanish commentary on Track 1.

You can put the preferred language in the preferences then. Put "en"

That works! Even though I had actually looked for a relevant configuration setting, I had missed that "Preferred audio language" entry field under "Tracks". (I think I did not look very hard because I was experiencing inconsistent behavior depending on what channel I had recorded.) I apologize for the noise. There is no problem.

Since my GUI interface language is English, it would make sense to have English as a default setting for "Preferred audio language". This would avoid the sort of confusion I experienced. Any default at all would help to avoid the inconsistent behavior I experienced.
