DD and DTS multi-channel support on G5 optical output

I'm sure this topic has been up before but I couldn't find it in the requests when searching so I'm starting a new thread.

Request: Support for multi-channel DolbyDigital (AC-3) and DTS output through the PowerMac G5 optical output.

Why is it so hard to fix this? Is the chance greater that we'll see support in VLC for this now when the audio-module(?) has been changed in the latest VLC (0.8.2)?

It's hard because Apple made it so hard to support it.
It will get fixed eventually, but as long as noone sents me a G5, i'm not really motivated and I have more pressing issues.

Why not start a donation via PayPal for a secondhand G5 1,6 single. It can't cost more than about 1 000 €, so if 100 people donated 10 € you could have a G5 for the development team :)
And I'm sure there is more than 100 people wanting multi-channel audio output on their G5:s.

I'll help those 100 so they can find the paypal donation page : http://www.videolan.org/contribute.html

Would be nice with a dedicated PayPal-account for donations for a G5 so poeple know that the money they donate to buy a G5 only goes to bying a G5. And there would also be nice with a public meter on how much money that has been donated so far.

people can add comments saying its for the G5 and i'll update a G5-donation meter on the donations page :)

Just did a donation of 10€ and wrote "PowerMac G5" as a comment. Now where's that G5-donation meter :)

Can't acces the url cause it has expired.

I see that the G5-meter stretches to 1490 €. I've seen a lot of second-hand G5:s for under 1000€. Here is an example:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... eName=WDVW

1000$ is about 800€. Isn't a Single G5 @ 1,6 GHz enough? It's the same motherboard with the same audio-components.

Hello Guys!

Actually, I'm in vacation in Bali. I just read some news at macbidouille.com about the fact you need some money to buy a G5.

I'll be back to Antony (the city just close to your Ecole Centrale) on september the 4th. So I promise you to donate the money lacking to you for getting this G5. If you need the best G5, just tell me, I will complete for the money you need. You got my email so don't hesitate to remind me if I forget, but I think I won't.

Macintosh platform needs guys like you and I do support your efforts.

Mandrake.

I think dionoea is updating the progress bar manually :?

I have sent a PM to dionoea about a week ago, but no answer yet. Maybe he's on vacation?

It seems like there is enough money donated for them to buy a G5 now :)
