The new QT4 interface is already implemented and available since VLC 0.9.
Many of the suggestions mentioned in this thread are not implemented though and many probably never will be.

All grey: This all grey could go for the Mac builds of VLC

Any news from any dev's here what/whose icons are gonna make it and which release?

Nice, although a design like that will not go over well with the Mac community, I can tell you that.

No. Some type of colour DOES look nicer under Windows Explorer.

One has to think of users who have mixed folder of audio and video content together with often varying icon views. Then there are many apps like file managers, web browsers and such that will use the icons at smaller sizes too. I am still sure, if the rest of you are sure, that any of the grey sets previously posted could be reserved for Mac OS, but he needs to make the symbol stand-out much more and certainly remove the text.

This whole subject has dragged on a bit now  and needs to come to a final resolution.

Well, I don't know who made you the authority on the subject, but 'he' can do whatever the hell he pleases to do.
And I'm not gonna 'certainly remove the text' just because you say so..

Authority is the vlc-devel mailing list.

I wasn't talking to you, j-b, but thanks for clearing that up...

I've given my Illustrator files to aLtgLasS and am taking my hands off the matter. I've also posted some Mac .icns files somewhere in this thread, so anyone wanting to use them can go ahead.

Good luck to vlc_fan and see you around

Great, forums back online again and VLC 1.0 has been released :)

Sorry for the brashness, it's just that many dev's here always ask for more development support in VLC and for me not being a software coder and instead contributing on a more graphical side I just wanted more attention on the subject...casue VLC still hasn't got any proper file icons as yet. My icons aren't spectacular, just nice I think, I really like them and I want many Windows (and Linux) users to share them for use.

My friend, that's all you had to state to us. You told me this sometime already but now you just reiterated to me that these type of decisions have gotta go through mailing list.

I've made some icons for this purpose, based on the basic orange & white cone.

Those are just colour variations of the original icon (in blue, green, red, purple...) without any text on it, so people can assign them manually to the file extensions of their choosing. And they are rather small, so they are principally designed for a file list display in "detail" mode (and not as a big icon display mode).

I know it's not as good as other work here, which I admire, but I made these without knowing about this thread!

Lemme see if I can make that proposal in the mailing list.

Made another small adjustment to that download package (new link) with the final redo of the 16x16 icon size, see:

I sent an email with the icons to:

Code: Select all

videolan-devel@videolan.org
fingers crossed

QT Enhancement suggestion: I notice on two media player's I have used that the associated file icon of the filetype is displayed in it's 16x16 size on the corner of the GUI. The media player's I meant that did this is on Media Player Classic and also seen on a particular KM Player skin I use (see below). I think this would make a great visual enhancement for VLC's interface too...

on the KM Player skin called Sparkle

Here is another alternate way a file icon can be read and displayed: As a cool visualization maybe at 256pix or largest size!

Has there been any advancements regarding an accessible VLC interface for Windows and / or gnome? Was there ever a wxWidgets plugin, as discussed in this thread, to provide full accessibility for the blind and visually impaired, using JAWS from FreedomScientific.com or NVDA from nvda-project.org. Most blind users have had to search out and keep VLC Player at version 0.86i! That version works great, but our community would like to keep up with VLC enhancements. Likewise, I would like to have VLC accessible in the gnome desktop of Ubuntu 10.0.4 Lucid and Ubuntu 10.1 Maverick. I would assume a gtk interface is generally more accessible using Orca.

VLC is perfectly accessible with NVDA. Jaws is broken, but they refuse to fix it.

I just reeeeaaaallly wanted to one-up the idea for an "Album" column / tab in interface !!
It would very nearly per-fect things !!
[Maybe a column for "year" as well, but the "Album" column is a must-have !!]
This is just about the best player out I think. Probably is , but a few more tweaks and it would just be indisputable. :D :D :D :D
Loving my Flac files.

Same old icons are still in use.
